A patient's life-changing experience at a treatment center reveals a healthcare gem. But is it a hidden gem?
A recent visit to the Corby Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) in Northamptonshire has brought to light a remarkable story of medical care. Christine Baaki, a 55-year-old asthma sufferer, shared her experience, praising the center for diagnosing a heart condition that had gone unnoticed by other doctors.
Baaki's journey began when she sought treatment at the UTC and was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a serious heart condition. This diagnosis, she believes, could have been missed if not for the center's expertise. Now, she receives specialized care from a dedicated heart hospital.
But here's where it gets controversial: Baaki prefers the UTC over her local A&E department, despite the distance. She claims that the longest wait she's experienced at the UTC was just two hours, a stark contrast to the 14-hour wait she's endured at A&E. This raises the question: Are urgent treatment centers the unsung heroes of the healthcare system?
The center, run by DHU Healthcare, has treated nearly 18,000 patients since November, many of whom might have otherwise ended up in A&E. Advanced clinical practitioner Rob Bradley explains that the UTC is not for routine GP appointments or emergencies but for urgent cases like sore throats and chest infections. They offer a range of services, including blood tests, X-rays, and plastering.
The efficiency of the UTC is evident. Patients are given appointment times, and if there's a wait, they can leave and return later. This system, coupled with the ability to book appointments through the NHS 111 service, ensures patients are seen promptly, often within 10 to 15 minutes of their appointment time.
The center's impact is undeniable. In December, they treated over 9,000 patients, a significant increase from November. Asun Valle, clinical services lead, attributes this to the winter surge in respiratory illnesses and injuries. She envisions a future where every county has a similar center, easing the burden on A&E departments.
This idea is echoed by Jeremy Lane, 72, who traveled from Market Harborough for treatment. He received prompt care for a dislocated joint, a process that would have taken much longer at A&E. Lane believes that with growing populations, more of these centers are needed in towns.
