Deandre Ayton Dominates! Lakers Crush Raptors with Historic Performance | NBA Highlights (2026)

Deandre Ayton showcased an impressive performance as the Lakers surged past the Raptors in a thrilling game on Sunday night, highlighting the team's potential when fully equipped. Coach JJ Redick found himself with a significantly bolstered roster, thanks to the return of key players just as the schedule intensified.

Back in action were superstar Luka Doncic (dealing with left groin soreness), center Deandre Ayton (recovering from left knee soreness), and backup center Jaxson Hayes (who had been managing left hamstring tendinopathy). The only absentee was Austin Reaves, sidelined due to a left calf strain.

This matchup against the Toronto Raptors at Crypto.com Arena also featured LeBron James, who played despite the Lakers having faced a tough loss in Portland the night before. The takeaway? When the Lakers are at full strength, they are a formidable team, especially when all three—Doncic, James, and Ayton—each score over 20 points, as they did in their decisive 110-93 victory. Their defense was remarkably effective, limiting the Raptors to a season-low point total.

The Lakers entered this contest having suffered five defeats in their last six games, and they had conceded more than 130 points in their previous two losses. "This time of year poses challenges for every NBA team," Redick noted after his squad improved to a respectable 25-16 record at the halfway point of the grueling 82-game season. He emphasized, "Many teams, including ours, are grappling with injuries that have left rotation and starter-level players, even All-Stars, missing games. This reality complicates what is already a tough stretch in the season. Our players have done an admirable job of battling through it, and we’re starting to regain our health, which we hope includes getting AR back soon."

Ayton stood out with a phenomenal double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while achieving an extraordinary feat: he shot 10 for 10 from the field and went 5 for 6 from the free-throw line. In doing so, he made history by becoming only the third player in Lakers history to maintain a perfect shooting percentage on 10 attempts while collecting at least 10 rebounds, joining the ranks of legends Wilt Chamberlain and Mitch Kupchak.

Furthermore, Ayton made his mark as the first player in the NBA this season to hit the 20-point mark with perfect shooting from the field on a minimum of 10 attempts, placing him among only 34 players in NBA history to accomplish such a remarkable achievement.

"I owe a lot to my teammates," Ayton remarked, acknowledging their role in his success. "They set me up in great positions, and I definitely had some easy baskets tonight."

Doncic also contributed significantly, finishing with 25 points and seven assists, while LeBron added 24 points and seven assists of his own. Off the bench, Rui Hachimura chipped in with 10 points, which proved crucial for the Lakers, who had been struggling recently.

In the first half, both Doncic and Ayton made their presence felt decisively. Despite facing foul trouble, including picking up three fouls and receiving a technical foul early in the game, Doncic still managed to score 18 points and dish out five assists in the first half. His three-pointer just before halftime allowed the Lakers to edge ahead 55-54.

Ayton was active right from the start, running the court, catching lob passes, and scoring effectively in the post, resulting in 12 points on six-for-six shooting along with seven rebounds by the end of the half.

Looking ahead, the Lakers are set to embark on what is referred to as the "Grammys Trip," a demanding eight-game road stretch that will keep them away from home for approximately two and a half weeks. This sequence starts with a game in Denver and includes matchups against the Clippers, Mavericks, Bulls, Cavaliers, Wizards, Knicks, and Nets.

This trip follows a grueling schedule where the Lakers played five games in just seven nights, which included two sets of back-to-back matchups. Redick commented on this challenging phase before the game against the Raptors, stating, "We’ve wrapped up five games in eight nights and now started another five in seven nights; tonight is the culmination of that effort. It's been a tough stretch, particularly with all the injuries and challenging games."

For the matchup against the Raptors, Redick aimed to rotate 10 players instead of the typical nine, which helped keep the team fresh and energized during the critical moments of the game—a strategy that will be vital moving forward.

Redick elaborated, "I’m not placing blame on anything, but the recent in-season tournament has created a disjointed rhythm for our games. Apart from the All-Star break, I believe our next two-day break comes at the end of March, so managing rest and recovery becomes paramount."
